In 1905, the painter and teacher Albert H. Munsell did something no one had managed before: he gave color an address. Every color, he showed, can be located by three measures — its hue (which color family), its value (how light or dark), and its chroma (how strong or gray). His system still underpins how artists, scientists, and industries describe color today.
